NYPAC Institute researchers have published a landmark study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) examining innovative strategies for improving colorectal cancer screening rates among underserved populations.
The study, led by Dr. Sherri Sheinfeld Gorin, analyzed data from over 15,000 patients across 50 primary care practices in the New York metropolitan area. Results demonstrated that a combination of academic detailing for physicians and patient navigation services led to a 35% increase in colorectal cancer screening completion rates.
'These findings provide compelling evidence that multi-component interventions can significantly reduce disparities in cancer screening,' explained Dr. Gorin. 'The key is addressing barriers at both the provider and patient level simultaneously.'
The research also identified several key factors associated with successful screening completion, including the quality of physician-patient communication, availability of culturally appropriate educational materials, and access to flexible scheduling options. These insights will inform future intervention development and implementation strategies.
